The Silent Blade

Deep within the marshes of the Fallow Mire stood an ancient stone fortress hidden among the mist and twisted trees.

Few knew of its existence.

It was the stronghold of a secret brotherhood of assassins who had spent generations protecting villages from tyrants, corrupt lords, and invading armies.

Among them was a young assassin named Sami.

He was quiet, patient, and deadly with a blade. But unlike the other assassins, Sami often questioned whether killing was always the answer.

His master, Master Andres, believed otherwise.

“Power is built on fear,” Andres would tell him. “Remove the man, and the fear disappears.”

Sami was about to discover that his master was only partly right.

The Mission
One evening, a messenger arrived at the Brotherhood fort with troubling news.

The governor of Novigrad had become a tyrant.

His soldiers seized food from the villages. His tax collectors demanded impossible payments. Those who resisted disappeared into his prisons.

Worse still, the governor's army was preparing to march into the surrounding countryside.

The Brotherhood could not allow it.

Andres summoned Sami to the war room.

“Travel to Novigrad,” he ordered. “Enter the governor's palace and kill the governor.”

Sami bowed.

“As you command.”

Before dawn, he left the Brotherhood fort in the Fallow Mire and began his journey southwest.

The Palace
After several days, Sami reached Novigrad.

That night, he slipped through the governor's palace and found the governor alone in his chambers.

The governor stood beside a table covered with maps and documents.

Sami stepped from the shadows.

“Why do you hurt these people?”

The governor turned and laughed.

“Because no one can stop me.”

Sami drew his blade.

“Then perhaps you are wrong.”

Before he could strike, the doors burst open.

Guards rushed into the chamber.

Sami threw a smoke bomb onto the floor and disappeared into the darkness.

The guards searched the palace until dawn.

But Sami had already escaped.

The mission, however, was far from over.

Taking Away His Power
Sami realized that killing the governor would not solve the problem.

Another governor could simply take his place.

So instead, Sami decided to destroy the things that made the governor powerful.

First, he infiltrated the palace treasury.

He discovered that the governor had been stealing grain and gold from the surrounding villages.

Sami opened the treasury and secretly returned the stolen supplies to the people.

Then he found the governor's secret records.

The documents revealed that the governor had been cheating his own soldiers, selling military supplies, and keeping their wages for himself.

Sami copied the evidence and spread it throughout Novigrad.

Within days, the governor's soldiers began questioning his orders.

Merchants stopped supporting him.

Nobles withdrew their allegiance.

And the villagers, who had lived in fear for years, finally realized something important:

The governor was not all-powerful.

He only appeared powerful because everyone believed they had no choice but to obey him.

The Fall of the Governor
When the governor ordered his soldiers to march against the villages, they refused.

His officers abandoned him.

His guards deserted the palace.

The people of Novigrad stormed the treasury and reclaimed what had been stolen from them.

By the time the governor looked out from his palace balcony, his army was gone.

His wealth was gone.

His allies were gone.

And the people no longer feared him.

The governor fled Novigrad before sunrise.

Sami watched from the rooftops as the governor disappeared into the distance.

He could have killed him.

But he didn't.

Instead, he had taken away everything that made the governor dangerous.

The Silent Blade
Sami returned to the Brotherhood fort in the Fallow Mire.

Master Andres was waiting for him.

“You were sent to kill a man,” Andres said.

Sami nodded.

“I was.”

“And yet he lives.”

Sami looked toward the mist-covered marshes beyond the fortress.

“He lives without power.”

Andres was silent.

Sami continued.

“I learned that killing a tyrant only ends one life. Taking away his power can save thousands.”

For the first time, his master smiled.

“Then you have learned something no assassin can be taught with a blade.”

From that day forward, Sami was known throughout the Brotherhood as the Silent Blade.

Not because he was the deadliest assassin.

But because he had learned that sometimes the most powerful strike...

was the one that left no body behind.
